What Working in a Speakeasy Taught Me About Creating an Unforgettable Event

An unforgettable cocktail experience is not created by the drink alone.

It begins before the first sip—with the atmosphere, the presentation, the energy behind the bar, and the way guests feel throughout the night.

For years, I have worked behind the bar and helped develop original cocktails and rotating menus for one of downtown Phoenix’s most recognized speakeasies.

Creating new drinks every week has taught me plenty about balance, technique, and ingredients, but the most valuable lessons have been about hospitality.

Those lessons now shape the experiences I create through Saints & Spirits.

The Cocktail Is Only Part of the Experience

Guests might order a drink because the ingredients sound interesting, but the complete presentation is what creates anticipation.

The glassware, color, garnish, aroma, name, and story all influence how someone experiences a cocktail. Before the drink ever reaches their lips, they have already started forming an impression.

That does not mean every cocktail needs smoke, fire, or an over-the-top garnish.

Sometimes the most memorable presentation is clean and intentional. Every detail should support the drink instead of distracting from it.

The same principle applies to private events. The bar should feel connected to the celebration—not like an unrelated service added at the last minute.

A Focused Menu Creates a Better Experience

One of the biggest lessons I have learned from developing speakeasy menus is that more choices do not automatically create a better menu.

A long list of cocktails may sound impressive, but it can overwhelm guests and slow down service. A shorter, carefully selected menu makes ordering easier while allowing each cocktail to have its own identity.

For a private event, that could mean offering a few options that cover different preferences:

  • Something bright and refreshing

  • Something spirit-forward

  • Something fruit-driven or tropical

  • A zero-proof option for guests who are not drinking

The exact menu should reflect the crowd, season, theme, and style of the celebration. Every drink should earn its place rather than being included simply to make the menu appear larger.

A focused menu also helps service move faster, keeps cocktails consistent, and gives guests more time to enjoy the event instead of studying a long list of choices.

Familiar Can Still Feel Exciting

Not every guest wants an experimental cocktail filled with unfamiliar ingredients—and that is completely fine.

Working in a speakeasy has taught me how to introduce creativity without losing approachability. Some of the best cocktails begin with a recognizable classic and add one unexpected detail that gives it a new personality.

A Margarita, Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour, or Daiquiri already gives the guest a familiar point of reference. From there, the cocktail can be shaped around the season, event theme, or guest of honor.

Saints & Spirits can also develop original signature cocktails specifically for an event.

Even original ideas are usually built upon proven cocktail structures, but the flavor combinations, presentation, name, and story can make the final drink feel completely personal.

The goal is not to create something unusual simply to show off. The goal is to create something guests genuinely want to order again.

Hospitality Means Reading the Room

A bartender has to do more than memorize recipes. You have to pay attention.

Some guests want to ask questions and learn everything about their cocktail. Others know exactly what they want and appreciate fast, confident service. Some need help finding a drink that matches their preferences, while others simply want something refreshing before returning to the party.

Reading those moments is part of hospitality.

Working inside a speakeasy has taught me how to adjust my approach without making the interaction feel forced. The best service feels personal while still allowing the guest to enjoy the event on their own terms.

At a private party, the bartender is also part of the energy in the room. A calm, organized, and welcoming presence behind the bar helps create a smoother experience for the host and every guest.

The Bar Should Add to the Atmosphere

At a speakeasy, the bar is often the visual and social center of the room. Guests naturally gather around it, watch cocktails being prepared, start conversations, and become part of the experience.

I wanted the Saints & Spirits mobile bar to create that same energy.

With its polished black finish and illuminated branding, the bar is designed to catch the eye and become a centerpiece rather than disappear into the background. It creates a professional workspace for efficient service, but it also gives guests a place to gather, take photos, and connect.

The bar should not feel separate from the celebration. It should help shape the atmosphere around it.

Details Create Memories

Guests may not remember every ingredient in their cocktail, but they remember the small details that made the experience feel intentional.

They remember the drink named after the guest of honor. They remember the garnish that caught their attention. They remember discovering a new flavor, watching a cocktail come together, or gathering around a glowing bar with friends.

None of those moments happen by accident.

They come from understanding the event, planning the menu carefully, creating an inviting presentation, and paying attention to how guests respond throughout the night.

Bringing the Speakeasy Experience to You

Saints & Spirits was built to bring the creativity, atmosphere, and hospitality of a craft cocktail speakeasy directly to private events.

That does not mean trying to recreate the same bar in every location. It means applying the lessons I have learned behind the bar to create an experience that feels right for your celebration.

Every event is different. The menu, presentation, pacing, and style of service should reflect that.

Because an unforgettable event is not defined by how complicated the cocktails were. It is defined by how the entire experience made people feel.
